Growing-up I never appreciated how much my mom was a forward thinking person with amazing insight into life. She was just, “mom”. Known by the funny nickname that dad assigned her many years ago, “Basha”, she was a force to be reckoned with! Her sense of justice and fairness prevailed in all areas of life. And her ‘can-do’ attitude was legendary among family and friends.

Known most for kind and compassionate public engagement, she was also known for her work in human services, a field in which I also volunteered in, and worked in, for decades. Together we spent well over half a century supporting families, youth, and individuals in their pursuits to access programs and services, connect to the community, and engage more positively in life. Using the very skills she taught throughout her life.
It wasn’t until her passing in 2025 that I realized that like a foreign language only spoken with one other person, I was afraid to lose so much of what was unwritten. Around that time I was also posting little snippits of her ‘wise words’ to much fanfare. Many messaged or called and said, “you should write a book!” And so I did!
This is a memoir with heart, but also a great resource for revisiting life’s lessons and reminding yourself of what’s important. It also allows you, the reader, to reflect upon the lessons and apply them to your own life.

It’s funny…over the years that is the very phase that was mentioned in my family, whispered in corners, and shouted when needed.
Basha was known for ‘gently’ reminding us that there was a correct way to do things and an incorrect way. She could silently cast a gaze that reminded you of who you were and where you came from!

She also was a hearty woman with an equally hearty laugh. She adored any occasion to gather. From family dinners to large holiday parties, she enjoyed social gatherings, community events (I don’t think she ever missed a parade), and of course, her FAMILY.
And family was a big part of her life. She believed that family grounded you and, “kept you honest”. Her friends were equally important. She was known for her participation in many groups and activities over the years. Everything from crafting and floral instruction, to bingo and bowling! She tried it all. A true sense of adventure and her trademark ‘can do’ attitude carried her through much excitement in life.
As a lasting legacy, her work in the community, and with loved ones carried a great weight. Her absence is felt by many. This book is a chance to learn from an amazing human and to share her legacy of kindness for fellow humans.
